Some folks swear by the dead of winter, others talk about avoiding the rain, and a few brave souls might even mention hurricane season.
Here’s the truth from someone who’s been there: there is no single “best” time. There’s only the best time for you. It all comes down to what kind of trip you’re itching for. The Classic Vacation: January Through April
Let’s start with the obvious. If your dream vacation involves zero chance of rain, endless sunshine, and calm, turquoise seas, then target these months. This is the dry season, and it’s Grenada at its most postcard-perfect. The weather is honestly a dream. You’re looking at sunny skies day after day, with a lovely breeze that keeps the heat feeling fresh, not overwhelming. This is prime time for lying on Grand Anse Beach, sailing around the island, and diving the famous Underwater Sculpture Park with crystal-clear visibility.
But and it’s a big but this perfection comes with a price tag. And I mean that literally. This is peak season. Flights and hotels are at their most expensive. You’ll need to book your favourite guesthouse months in advance because everyone else is thinking the same thing. The main beaches will be lively (some might say crowded), and you’ll need a reservation for dinner at the popular spots. If your top priority is flawless weather and you’re okay with the premium cost and company, this is your spot.
The Insider’s Secret: May and Early December
Now, if you want to let you in on a little secret, my absolute favourite times to go are May and the first two weeks of December. Think of these as the “shoulder seasons” the sweet spots right on the edge of the high season.
You still get absolutely fantastic weather. In May, the big winter crowds have left, but the island is still lush and green from the brief showers that usually just cool things off for an hour. The sea is still wonderfully warm, and the pace of life slows down to a more genuinely Caribbean rhythm. Best of all, you’ll often see hotel prices take a significant dip from their winter highs.
The same magic happens in early December. It’s like the entire island is gearing up for the Christmas rush but hasn’t quite gotten there yet. The weather is stunning, everything is open, and you can find some really nice deals before prices skyrocket for the holidays. It’s a perfect little pocket of calm.
The Culture and The Deals: June Through November
This is the part that surprises people. Everyone hears “hurricane season” and gets nervous. And look, that’s a real consideration. From June through November, you’re signing up for hotter temperatures, more humidity, and a higher chance of rain usually in the form of intense, brief afternoon downpours that leave everything feeling fresh. The hurricane risk is highest from August through October.
So why would anyone go then? Two absolutely brilliant reasons.
First, and most importantly: Spicemas. This is Grenada’s incredible Carnival, and it takes over the entire island in August. If you want to experience Grenada’s heart and soul, you go for Spicemas. It’s a riot of colour, sound, and energy. The soca music is infectious, the costumes are breathtaking, and the street parties are something you’ll remember forever. It’s hot, it’s crowded, and it’s 100% authentic. You need to book way ahead for this.
Second, and this is a huge one: the prices. This is, hands down, the cheapest time to visit Grenada. We’re talking flights and hotels for half the price of a January trip, or even less. The island is also much quieter. You can find entire beaches deserted and really get a sense of having the place to yourself. You do have to be a smart traveller get really good travel insurance, book with flexible policies, and keep an eye on the weather forecast. But for the traveller who loves a bargain and doesn’t mind a bit of adventure, the rewards are massive.
