Dry Season (Nov–May): Sun, Smiles & Good Times
If you’re all about that sunshine life, this is your time. From November to May, Gambia is basically showing off blue skies, cool breezes, and barely a cloud in sight.
What It’s Really Like:
- Days are sunny and warm (around 24°C–32°C), but it’s not that sticky heat you get later in the year.
- Evenings can get surprisingly cool perfect for sitting outside and listening to the waves.
- The sea is calm and inviting ideal for swimming, kayaking, or just floating around.
- This is when all the action happens. Resorts along Kotu Beach and Bakau are buzzing with energy.
Why I Love This Season:
- Birdwatchers, listen up! This is prime time. Abuko Nature Reserve is alive with kingfishers, hornbills, and even rare migrants. Bring your binoculars!
- Festival vibes: December brings the Kankurang Festival think masked dancers, drumming, and energy that’ll give you goosebumps. Then in April, the International Roots Festival hits hard with music, art, and powerful storytelling.
- Beach life: Picture yourself on a golden sandy beach, cold drink in hand, watching fishing boats bob in the distance. Pure bliss.
Heads Up:
This is peak season, so book early! Flights and hotels fill up fast, especially around Christmas. Prices are higher, but the vibe is worth it.
Rainy Season (Jun–Oct): Green, Serene & Budget-Friendly
Now, I know what you’re thinking rain? But hear me out. If you don’t mind a little water, this season has its own kind of magic.
What It’s Really Like:
- It doesn’t rain all day! Most days, you’ll get a heavy shower in the afternoon or evening, then it clears up.
- The landscape transforms lush, green, and vibrant. Perfect for photos.
- It’s hotter and more humid, but that also means fewer tourists and lower prices.
- The River Gambia is full and flowing great for boat trips and fishing.
Why This Season Rocks:
- You’ll have places to yourself. Beaches, markets, even lodges it feels like you have Gambia all to yourself.
- Local experiences: With fewer tourists around, you can connect more with locals. I’ve had some of my best conversations in roadside tea shops during the rainy season.
- Wallet-friendly: You’ll find great deals on accommodations and tours. It’s a steal if you’re traveling on a budget.
Just Know:
- Some rural roads can get muddy and tricky. A 4×4 might be needed if you’re venturing inland.
- Mosquitoes are more active, so pack repellent and consider malaria prophylaxis.
- Always carry a light rain jacket it’s a lifesaver when those sudden showers hit.
